In south Merrick, a plumbing emergency can start in the bay. Farther north, it's more likely an old pipe or a water heater giving out. Our Merrick page has the local background; the emergency plumber page has a general checklist.

How half the hamlet floods

Our overlay of FEMA's current flood map puts about 49% of the Merrick CDP's area in the high-risk flood zone: roughly 31% in zone AE and 17% in the coastal VE zone, where waves add to the surge. That share includes the marsh and bay inside the boundary, but the canal streets south of Merrick Road sit right against it. The state's NY Rising plan for Bellmore and Merrick counts about 230 storm-drain outfalls along the hamlets' shoreline and notes that very few have tidal check valves, which leaves a direct path for high tides to come up through the street drains.

When the pump stations lose power

The same plan explains how sewage got into homes during Sandy: county sewage pump stations that flooded lost power and failed, "causing sewage to back up from the district system into private homes." If the power is out in a storm and your floor drain starts to rise, that can be the reason. What to do:

  • Stop running water and flushing toilets in the house.
  • Keep people and pets out of the basement, and don't wade in to reach an electrical panel.
  • Leave the water heater and boiler off if water has reached them.
  • If it's the whole street, report it to Nassau County Public Works' 24-hour sewer line, (516) 571-6900, or the SUEZ hotline for sewer issues, 866-224-8508.

If it's only your house on a dry day, the blockage is in your line, and we clear it.

Large houses, long supply runs

The Census Bureau's latest survey puts Merrick's median home at 7.5 rooms, with 55% of homes having four or more bedrooms, and 20% built before 1940. In a big, older house, a split supply line in a second-floor bathroom or behind a finished wall can run for a while unnoticed. Know where the main shutoff is, near where the service enters the house, and test it once a year so it turns when you need it.

Questions

Emergency plumber in Merrick: FAQ

The street drains are bubbling up at high tide. Is that our plumbing?
Usually not. That's tide water coming through storm-drain outfalls without check valves. If water or sewage is coming up inside the house, call us.
Sewage came up during a power outage. Will it happen again?
It can, if pump stations fail again. A backwater valve on your house sewer is the long-term protection for a house on the sewer.
Our water heater sat in salt water. Can it be saved?
Usually not. Leave it off. We check it and replace it if the controls or burner were flooded.
