Merrick's sewage goes to the county's Cedar Creek plant in Wantagh, and in the south of the hamlet the line from each house runs through low, filled ground. See our Merrick page and the general sewer line repair page.
Where it goes
The state's NY Rising plan says the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in neighboring Wantagh receives and treats Merrick's wastewater. The Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection's 2020 report describes Cedar Creek as the county's plant for eastern Nassau: placed in operation in 1974, it collects from about 105 square miles and serves an estimated 600,000 people, with 15 county pump stations feeding it. According to the plan, two county sewage pump stations sit inside the hamlets' high-risk flood zones.
What's yours
The county owns the main in the street. The lateral from your foundation to that main is the owner's. The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 53% of Merrick homes built in the 1950s and 1960s and 20% before 1940, so most laterals are clay or cast iron, 55 to 85 years old. Typical failures:
- Settling in filled ground. The plan notes that many homes were built on filled marsh. Pipe there can sink unevenly, leaving a sag that holds solids.
- Roots at clay joints, which return after every cleaning.
- Cracks and offsets under driveways, walks and patios.
- Thinned cast iron along the bottom of the pipe.
We clear the line, check what comes back, and repair the failed section or replace the run if the pipe is bad in several places.
Backwater valves for surge streets
Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 49% of the Merrick CDP in the high-risk flood zone. During Sandy, the NY Rising plan says, flooded pump stations lost power and sewage backed up from the district system into private homes. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer closes when the street sewer pushes back, so sewage can't come up through basement floor drains. It needs an accessible cleanout and an occasional check. We install them on houses where the layout allows. The plan's separate project for tidal check valves on storm-drain outfalls protects streets, not your house sewer.
Permits and who to call
Merrick is an unincorporated hamlet, so plumbing permits go through the Town of Hempstead. For a problem in the county main, call Nassau County Public Works' 24-hour sewer line, (516) 571-6900, or the SUEZ hotline for sewer issues, 866-224-8508.
