Franklin Square has an unusual heating mix: mostly natural gas, a large oil minority and a noticeable share of homes on bottled or tank gas. That mix decides what kind of water heater a house has. See also our Franklin Square page and water heater repair and installation.

Three fuels

The Census Bureau's latest survey shows 63% of homes heating with utility gas, 28% with fuel oil and 6% with bottled, tank or LP gas. Natural gas houses usually have a gas tank heater on a chimney or flue. In an oil house, the boiler often makes the hot water through a coil or an indirect tank. A home on tank gas needs equipment set up for that fuel, so tell us what your house uses when you call. On natural gas jobs we check the gas piping and venting every time.

Oil to gas

If you're switching from oil, many new gas boilers and furnaces don't make domestic hot water, so the switch usually adds a separate gas water heater and gas piping to it. National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743. We do the heater and the gas line. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

Soft district water

The Franklin Square Water District's 2025 report shows total hardness of 36.1 to 42.8 mg/L, which is soft, and nitrate of 1.0 to 2.0 mg/L, well under the limit. The district adds sodium hydroxide to raise the pH and reduce corrosion. Soft water leaves little scale, but sediment still collects, and the anode rod that protects the tank wears over time. Flushing the tank once a year and checking the anode on an older heater extend its life.

Two-family houses

9% of homes are two-family, and the average owner household is 3.19 people, by the survey. In many two-family houses each unit has its own heater. Each needs its own gas shutoff, vent connection and relief-valve line. If both share one heater, it has to be sized for both households.

Sprinklers and backflow

The district's report says it requires every resident with an automatic lawn sprinkler system to maintain a backflow device, so water from the sprinkler lines can't flow back into the drinking water. That's separate from your water heater, but it's often in the same basement; if you have a sprinkler system, call the district office at (516) 354-0780 for its requirements.

Questions

Water heaters in Franklin Square: FAQ

We have a two-family house. Is one water heater enough?
Only if it's sized for both households. Many two-family houses here have one heater per unit, each with its own shutoff and vent. We look at what you have before recommending anything.
We're converting from oil. Do we need a new water heater?
Usually yes, if the old boiler made your hot water. A separate gas water heater is the common answer. We install it and the gas line.
Our water is soft. Do we still need to flush the tank?
Yes, once a year. Sediment collects even with soft water.
