Deer Park is in between: no active sewer district today, but sewers planned along its main corridors. That means two different kinds of sewer-line work here. See also our Deer Park page and sewer line repair and hookups.
Today: the line to the cesspool
Laying the county's sewer-district map over the Census boundary, none of the hamlet is in an active sewer district, so almost every house line runs from the foundation to a cesspool or septic system on the lot. That pipe is the owner's, and it's ours to repair. With 61% of homes built in the 1950s or 1960s, by the Census Bureau's latest survey, many of those lines are 55 to 75 years old. A broken or root-filled line can look like a failing cesspool: everything drains slowly, then backs up. We clear the line first and find out which it is. If the pipe is broken, we repair or replace it. If the system is the problem, that's for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work.
Tomorrow: the corridor sewers
The county's map shows a proposed Deer Park Avenue Corridor district covering about 9% of the hamlet's area, along with older proposed Carlls River sewer areas. The county's 2025 Subwatersheds Wastewater Implementation Plan lists the Deer Park corridors project for sewers along Bay Shore Road, Commack Road, Deer Park Avenue and Long Island Avenue. The Town of Babylon calls the downtown sewer the longest-term part of its Deer Park revitalization.
What a hookup involves
When a sewer reaches your street, the county builds the main in the street. On the owner's side, the work is typically:
- a new line from the house to the street connection, deep enough and pitched correctly;
- rerouting the house drain so it leaves the house toward the street instead of toward the cesspool, if it currently exits the back;
- abandoning the old cesspool or septic system, which is cesspool work done by a separate contractor.
We do the first two. We'll look at where your drain leaves the house and how far it is to the street before the sewer arrives, so there are no surprises.
Repair or replace now?
If your line to the cesspool is failing today, it has to be fixed today; the corridor sewers won't reach most streets soon. If you're on a corridor street and the work is planned, it may make sense to plan the house side of a repair with the future connection in mind. We'll tell you what we see.
No flood complications
Our overlay of FEMA's flood map finds none of Deer Park in a mapped flood zone, so sewer-line work here is about pipe and soil, not storm surge.
