Deer Park sits in two of the Suffolk County Water Authority's distribution areas, and the water in each treats a tank a little differently. See also our Deer Park page and water heater repair and installation.

Which SCWA area you're in

SCWA's index puts most of Deer Park north of the LIRR, plus some areas south of it east of Carll's Path, in Distribution Area 12, and the rest south of the tracks in Area 1. In Area 12, SCWA's 2026 report on 2025 water shows total hardness ranging from 11.3 to 198.2 mg/L, averaging 72.5, so depending on which wells feed your street, the water can be quite soft or moderately hard. Area 1 averages about 37 mg/L, soft. Iron exceeds New York's 300 microgram standard in some samples in both areas, and SCWA adds polyphosphates to keep it dissolved.

What that means in the tank

Harder water leaves scale on the bottom of a gas tank and on the elements of an electric one; iron settles as rusty sediment. Either one makes a tank rumble, heat slowly and run out sooner. A yearly flush clears most of it. On an electric heater that keeps tripping or runs lukewarm, a scaled element is a common cause, and it's replaceable.

Family-size tanks

The Census Bureau's latest survey puts the average Deer Park owner household at 3.28 people, with a median of 6.4 rooms, and counts 38% of homes with four or more bedrooms. A 1960s house that has gained a second full bath often still has the tank size it started with. We check for sediment and a broken dip tube before recommending a bigger heater.

Gas, oil and electric

The survey shows 59% of homes heating with utility gas, 25% with fuel oil and 12% with electricity. Gas houses usually have a gas tank heater on a chimney or flue. Electric-heat homes have electric tanks. In oil houses, hot water often comes from the boiler; converting to gas usually adds a separate gas water heater and gas piping (National Grid's Natural Gas Conversions line is 1-877-696-4743). We install the heater and the gas line. We don't repair oil boilers, and we don't sell or deliver oil.

On a cesspool

In a house without a sewer, a relief valve that drips, or a drain-pan line piped to a floor drain, sends water into the cesspool all day. That adds up. A dripping relief valve usually means too much pressure or temperature in the tank, or a worn valve, and it's worth fixing rather than ignoring.

Questions

Water heaters in Deer Park: FAQ

Is our water hard or soft?
It depends on your SCWA area and the wells serving your street. Area 1 is soft; Area 12 ranges from soft to moderately hard. SCWA can tell you which area you're in at (631) 698-9500.
Our electric water heater keeps tripping. Is it done?
Not necessarily. A scaled element or a failed thermostat is a common cause, and both can be replaced. If the tank leaks, it's time for a new one.
We're converting from oil to gas. Do we need a new water heater?
Usually, if the boiler made your hot water. We install a gas water heater and the gas line to it.
