Most of Copiague drains to the county's Southwest Sewer District, but not all of it, and a large share of the hamlet floods in storms. Both shape sewer-line work here. See our Copiague page and our sewer line repair page.

The district behind your lateral

Laying the county's sewer-district map over the Census boundary, about 87% of Copiague's area is in Suffolk County Sewer District 3. The Long Island Commission for Aquifer Protection's 2020 report says the original district plan, put to voters in 1969, called for the Bergen Point plant, 71 miles of interceptors, 817 miles of lateral, main and trunk lines, 14 pump stations and an ocean outfall. The Town of Babylon notes that the American Venice bridges were reinforced in the 1970s to carry the district's construction equipment. Your house's lateral, from the foundation to the street connection, is the owner's to maintain.

What fails in Copiague laterals

With 63% of homes built between 1950 and 1979, by the Census Bureau's latest survey, most laterals are clay, cast iron or early plastic. Common problems:

  • roots at clay joints, from trees and hedges that have grown along the line over the decades;
  • breaks and offsets under driveways and walks;
  • sags, where the pipe has settled in soft or wet ground, leaving a spot where solids collect.

We clear the line, look at what comes back, and repair the bad section or replace the run when the pipe has failed in more than one place.

Outside the district

The parts of Copiague that the county's map shows outside Sewer District 3 are at the far south end along the bay. Houses there drain to a cesspool or septic system on the lot. We repair and replace the pipe from the house to the system, and clearing it tells you whether the pipe or the system is at fault. The system itself is for a cesspool or septic contractor; we don't do cesspool work.

Storm tides and backwater valves

The state's NY Rising plan quotes residents describing water that "did boil up from beneath us" during Sandy, and HUD counted 2,152 Copiague homes with flooding. Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 28% of the hamlet's area in the high-risk zone. When the street sewer surcharges in a storm, it can push back up a sewered house's lateral and out of the floor drain. A backwater (sewer check) valve on the house sewer closes against that flow. We install them on sewered houses where the layout allows, with a cleanout for access.

Who's responsible for what

Suffolk Public Works says problems inside the building, or between your house connection and the main, are the owner's. Problems in the main are the county's: call the Sewer District 3 emergency line, (631) 854-4150.

Questions

Sewer line repair in Copiague: FAQ

Is my house on the sewer?
Most of Copiague is. Check your tax or sewer bill for a sewer district charge.
Sewage comes up our floor drain in storms. What fixes that?
On a sewered house, a backwater valve on the house sewer. We also check the lateral for blockages that make it worse.
Our line to the cesspool keeps backing up. Is it the pipe?
Maybe. We clear it and check. A clear pipe with standing water means the system needs a cesspool contractor.
