South of Montauk Highway, Copiague's emergencies tend to arrive with the tide. North of it, they're more often an old main giving up in a house with a lot of people in it. Background on the hamlet is on our Copiague page, and the emergency plumber page has a general checklist.
East Drive, West Drive and the harbors
The National Weather Service's coastal flood notes record the south ends of East Drive and West Drive submerged, roadways included, in a March 2013 storm, and both drives "totally inundated" in a January 2017 nor'easter that also put 1 to 2 feet of water on waterfront properties in Amity Harbor. Those are ordinary winter storms, not hurricanes. Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 28% of the Copiague CDP's area in the high-risk zone, mostly zone AE, with another 5% in the moderate-risk zone; about 11% of the area inside the boundary is water. If you live on the peninsulas, plan for the water before it arrives: know where the gas and power shutoffs for your water heater are, and keep the floor drain area clear.
When sewage comes up
Copiague is mostly on the county sewer, Sewer District 3. During a storm tide or a cloudburst, sewage can come up through a basement floor drain even when your own line is clear. Stop using water in the house. If only your house is affected on a dry day, the blockage is in your line and we clear it. If sewage is coming out of a manhole or the street is backed up, call Suffolk County's Sewer District 3 emergency line, (631) 854-4150.
Two households, one drain
The Census Bureau's latest survey counts 12% of Copiague homes as two-family houses, and puts average household size at 3.40 people for owners and 3.30 for renters. Renters here live in households nearly as large as owners do. Two families on one main drain means a blockage fills the lower unit fast. If you're downstairs and water is rising in the tub or toilet, ask upstairs to stop running water right away, then call.
Older houses, older valves
The HUD figures in the state's NY Rising plan for Amityville and Copiague put 74% of Copiague's housing as built before 1970. Main shutoff valves that old often stick. Try yours before you need it; if it won't turn, a replacement is a quick job.
