In Copiague, a lot of people often share a modest house, and that puts a steady load on drains that were installed decades ago. See our Copiague page and the general drain cleaning page.

More people per drain

The Census Bureau's latest survey puts the average owner household at 3.40 people and the average renter household at 3.30, in homes with a median of 5.9 rooms. Only 29% of homes have four or more bedrooms. Put together, that's a lot of cooking, laundry and showers going through each kitchen and bathroom line. The kitchen branch is usually the first to slow: grease cools inside the pipe and builds up, and food scraps catch on it. A strainer in the sink and a can for cooking fat make the biggest difference.

Two-family houses

12% of Copiague's homes are two-family houses, by the same survey. Two kitchens, two bathrooms and often two washing machines drain into one main. When that main starts to clog, the lower unit sees it first: water rising in a tub or floor drain when the upstairs unit runs water. We clear the main from the cleanout and tell both households what came back.

Lines from the building boom

The survey counts 30% of homes built in the 1950s, 16% in the 1960s and 17% in the 1970s. Many of those houses have cast-iron drains inside and a clay or cast-iron main to the street. The cast iron narrows with scale over time; the clay lets roots in at the joints. Several fixtures slowing down together is the sign the main, not a single drain, needs clearing.

The sewer, and the bridges it came over

By our overlay of the county's sewer-district map, about 87% of the hamlet's area is in Suffolk County Sewer District 3. The Town of Babylon's history of American Venice notes that the neighborhood's two bridges, built in 1926, had to be reinforced in the 1970s so construction equipment for the Southwest Sewer District could cross. The county maintains the sewer main in the street; Suffolk Public Works says a blockage inside your home or between your house connection and the main is not the county's, which is where we come in.

Slow drains on storm days

On the canal streets, the National Weather Service has recorded East and West Drives fully under water in winter storms. While the street is flooded, drains can run slowly even with a clear line. If they recover once the water drops, the cause was outside the house.

When to look at the pipe

If roots come back on the cable, or the same clog returns at the same spot, the pipe needs repair. Our Copiague sewer line page explains that work.

Questions

Drain cleaning in Copiague: FAQ

Our kitchen sink clogs every few months. Why?
Usually grease building up in the kitchen branch. We clear it fully, and keeping fat out of the sink keeps it clear longer.
Upstairs and downstairs both have slow drains. Is it two problems?
Probably one: the shared main. We clear it from the main cleanout.
The drains were slow during the storm but fine now. Should we worry?
Not if they stay fine. A flooded street can slow the sewer for a few hours. If they stay slow on dry days, call us.
