A Lindenhurst emergency usually starts one of two ways: salt water pushing in from the Great South Bay on the canal streets, or a pipe or drain giving out in a house that's been standing since the 1950s. The Lindenhurst page has the full village background; our emergency plumber page has a general checklist.
Tides that don't need a hurricane
Sandy set the record here, but the National Weather Service's flood-impact notes for Lindenhurst list plenty of smaller events. On August 28, 2011, during Irene, white-capped water stood 1 to 2 feet deep on South Ninth Street from about 6:30 in the morning. In December 2014 a coastal storm put 13 inches of water on Seacrest Avenue and Lido Promenade, up to the doors of parked cars and into some garages. In October 2018 a nor'easter riding a full-moon tide pushed water over most of the bulkheads south of Montauk Highway; one Venetian Boulevard resident reported it kept rising for more than an hour after high tide, reaching about 180 feet in from the bay. Our overlay of FEMA's flood map puts about 14% of the village's area in the high-risk flood zone, nearly all of it zone AE.
If water or sewage is coming in
- Stop running water anywhere in the house so you're not adding to a backup.
- If the basement is flooding, keep everyone out until the power to that area is off. Don't stand in water to reach a panel.
- Shut the gas or power to a water heater or boiler that the water has reached, and leave it off until it's been checked.
- If sewage is spilling from a manhole or the street is backed up, that's the county's: Suffolk County Public Works lists an emergency line for Sewer District 3 (Southwest), (631) 854-4150. The county's own guidance says a blockage inside your home is a job for a plumber.
Older pipe, two-family houses
The Census Bureau's latest survey puts Lindenhurst's median home at 1957, with 16% built before 1940. A galvanized supply line that old can split at a threaded joint without warning, so find your main shutoff before you need it, usually where the service comes through the front foundation wall. About 10% of homes are two-family houses, by the same survey; when the shared main drain stops, the downstairs unit floods first.

- Sewage in the street or from a manhole: Suffolk County Public Works, Sewer District 3 emergency line, (631) 854-4150.
