A 1920s resort village, 100 years old in 2026.
Wikipedia says the Island Park-Long Beach Company developed Island Park as a resort community in the 1920s, and it incorporated as a village in 1926, so the village marks its centennial this year. Its first mayor, Charles N. Talbot, served 12 years. A canal along Suffolk Road forms its western edge, the LIRR's Long Beach Branch its eastern edge, and Reynolds Channel its southern edge. The Census counts 1.5 square miles, all land. Neighboring Barnum Island and Harbor Isle are separate, unincorporated hamlets.
The Census Bureau's latest five-year survey counts about 1,900 homes, with a median year built of 1960. 26% went up in the 1950s, 14% before 1940, and 33% after 1980. 55% are single-family detached houses, 30% are two-family, and 59% are owner-occupied.
So a typical house here has drain and water lines around 66 years old unless they've been replaced. Slow drains in several fixtures, a gurgling floor drain or rusty water from one tap are signs to have the main line and supply piping checked.
Gas piping.
The ACS shows 76% of homes heat with utility gas, 8% with electricity and only 6% with fuel oil. New gas ranges, dryers and water heaters need properly sized gas piping, and a leak test after any change; we do the gas line work.
On the sewer.
Nassau County's health department lists Island Park's sewers under the Nassau County Department of Public Works (516-571-6841). A backup that stops at your house is usually in your own line to the street; we clear it and repair or replace the line. If neighbors are backed up too, call the county at 516-571-6841.
Flood risk.
Laying FEMA's current flood map over the Census boundary, about 96% of Island Park is in the high-risk (1% annual chance) flood zone (96.0% in zone AE; shares of the Census area, water included). On a sewered street, a backwater (sewer check) valve on your house sewer line can keep a street-sewer backup from coming in through basement floor drains. We install them. If your water heater or gas appliances ever sat in flood water, have them checked before relighting.
Raised roads and new water mains.
In June 2021 Patch reported New York American Water (now Liberty) replacing 5,000 feet of aging water main in Island Park, on California Place South, Sunset Avenue, Decatur Place, New York Avenue, Seaview Avenue and Vanderbilt Place, along with 105 company-owned service lines and seven hydrants, in step with the Town of Hempstead's road-raising and drainage project. With nearly the whole village in FEMA's high-risk flood zone and on a public sewer, a backwater valve is one of the most useful upgrades for a basement or low first floor here.
Water: Liberty Utilities.
Liberty Utilities (New York Water), formerly New York American Water, lists the Incorporated Village of Island Park in its Long Island District in its state tariff; your bill is the final word. Lead usually comes from a home's own pipes and fixtures, so if your house is old, it's worth knowing what your service line is made of. For a leak at the curb or in the street, call Liberty. For anything on your side of the meter, call us.
Permits.
Island Park is an incorporated village, so plumbing permits go through the Village of Island Park's building department, not the town.
